Carat - Canadian Star Diamond Information

A diamonds size is measured by its Carat weight. The Carat is a unit of weight originating back to the use of a carob bean, with one carat equaling 200 milligrams, or .2 grams. Furthermore diamond weight is declared in points with one carat equaling 100points, or .50 carat equaling 50 points and so forth. Because diamonds are weighed to the hundredths of a carat they must be weighed on extremely precise and sensitive scales.

All other factors being equal, as weight increases so does rarity and value. Diamond prices often rise exponentially with carat weight in that a 1 carat stone although equal in weight to two .50 carat stones of the same quality, is always far greater in value. Most commonly in the marketplace there are a number of popular weights as follows:

Quarter Carat / 25 points. 25ct
Third of a Carat / 33 points. 33ct
Half Carat / 50 points .50ct
Three Quarter Carat / 75 points .75ct
One Carat / 100points. 1.00ct
One and a Quarter Carat / 125 points. 1.25ct
One and a Half Carat / 150 points. 1.50ct
Two Carat / 200 points. 2.00ct

Less popular and “under size” weights do exist in the marketplace and often represent great value. If you are comfortable with these less popular weights the prices are often very appealing.

In the case of Diamond weight bigger is not necessarily better. A well cut smaller stone is often far more appealing than a poorly cut larger stone, so it is critical that all four C’s are taken into consideration.

Canadian Star Diamond sources and sells stones generally ranging from about 0.20ct up to about 3.00ct.  If you are interested in a diamond outside this range feel free to contact our customer care team at: customercare@canadianstardiamond.com
